How do I get customers for my auto repair shop?
Every auto repair shop has its own pricing structure, so estimates can vary. Part availability, labor rates and deductibles may affect how much you pay. You can also reduce costs by buying a car warranty to offset unexpected repairs. Reputable companies such as Endurance, ForeverCar and Olive offer affordable coverage for new and older vehicles.
Before you agree to any repairs, ask the shop how it prices its work. Some shops have a published rate for each type of job, while others base their charges on the actual time the technician spends working on your vehicle. You should also find out if the shop’s recommended work is necessary. If it is, ask if they can show you why. A facility that recommends additional non-scheduled maintenance work without conducting a professional inspection or validating the need for the service may be trying to sell you unnecessary repairs.
When the repair is complete, the shop must give you an invoice that shows each repair made and each part replaced, including their cost and the amount of labor involved. The invoice must also state whether the replacement parts are original, remanufactured or rebuilt, or used and their price and quality. Compare the invoice with your estimate to make sure that all the details match up. If you have a problem with the repairs, try to resolve it with the shop’s management. If you can’t, contact your state’s consumer protection agency.
